Ava DuVernay is one of the most important and influential filmmakers working today — the first Black woman to direct a Best Picture-nominated film (Selma) and the first to helm a live-action feature with a budget exceeding $100 million (A Wrinkle in Time). Her documentary 13th, examining mass incarceration and its links to the Thirteenth Amendment, is one of the most impactful documentary films of the decade. DuVernay is also a powerful advocate for representation in Hollywood.
